Open House

Revolution Books will be hosting an Open House around the special middle school/high school issue of Revolution newspaper (issue #176)- Actually... We CAN Change the World!

Come make plans about getting this issue out to the schools and where the youth are and discuss your experiences in taking out this issue.

Sept. 12, Saturday, 1:20pm, CAN-TV Channel 19 broadcast of:

Morality to Change the World With or Without God(s)?

The April 7, 2009 event at Columbia College was an extraordinary exchange on the idea of god and the role of religion. Is religion a creation of humanity whose time has long passed? Or does it serve some deeper need of human beings or point to some deeper reality? Are beliefs in gods obstacles or pathways to understanding and changing the world and to the emancipation of humanity?

Speakers:

Stephen Asma, Ph.D., is professor of philosophy and humanities at Columbia College Chicago. He is a science writer, Buddhist, and author of The Gods Drink Whiskey; Stumbling toward Enlightenment in the Land of the Tattered Buddha (Harper SanFrancisco, 2005).

Bob Bossie, SCJ, is a member of the international Catholic order of Priests of the Sacred Heart and a staff member of the 8th Day Center for Justice in Chicago, where he works on issues of peace, human rights, economic justice and non-violence. A founding member of Voices in the Wilderness, Bob has spoken widely and traveled to Iraq and Latin America.

Sunsara Taylor writes for Revolution Newspaper, the voice of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA. She is part of a national campus tour to promote the 2008 book, Away With All Gods! Unchaining the Mind and Radically Changing the World, by Revolutionary Communist Party Chairman Bob Avakian (Insight Press). Taylor has been featured in/on The New York Times, The O'Reilly Factor, and CNN's Showbiz Tonight.

This event was co-sponsored by the Department of Humanities, History and Social Sciences of Columbia College, 8th Day Center for Justice, and Insight Press.

Spread this via Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, blogs, emails and text blasts.

AND ON 9.1.09, join the movement to put this before thousands.

IN TWO DAYS,
Embed the clips (which will appear at www.youtube.com/RevolutionTalk on 9.1) or parts of the full film onto your sites and tell all your friends.

In 2003 Bob Avakian delivered this historic talk in the United States. This is a wide-ranging revolutionary journey. It breaks down the very nature of the society we live in and how humanity has come to a time where a radically different society is possible. He lays it all out in a nine-hour speech-and then goes into three hours of question-and-answer dialogue with the audiences. It's all there-full of heart and soul, humor and seriousness.

There is nothing online like THIS: nothing that gets at these questions as deeply, thoroughly and truthfully as this. Millions of people are searching for the truth, and watching videos, short and long. Some of these give part of the answer; but some of them-including some of the most popular-give people bullshit answers, pointing people in the wrong direction and spreading poison. Here, and all over the world, people need to see Revolution: Why It's Necessary, Why It's Possible, What It's All About.

And YOU are needed to spread this. Here are 4 ways to help make this happen.

1. Right now, forward this email/note. Post this announcement on your sites.

2. On 9.1.09, go to revolutiontalk.net and www.youtube.com/RevolutionTalk. Embed the clips or the full film onto your sites, post it on message boards, discussion groups... wherever people are debating big questions.

3. Download the promotional materials (posters, cards, stickers) NOW from revolutiontalk.net and get them up in your dorm rooms, housing projects, local coffee shops... Talk with your friends about taking this up as well - anyone you know who hates the way the world is and are hungering to understand it and be part of changing it radically.

4. Contribute funds at revolutiontalk.net starting on 9.1.09 to spread this further.

Get with and be part of launching the Revolution film online.

We received the following announcement from Chicago World Can't Wait. Contact Chicago World Can't Wait about going to Omaha. Details below.

Omaha August 28 and 29:
Come to Nebraska or help others get there!

Dr. CarhartDr. George Tiller's Wichita clinic, which cared for tens of thousands of women over thirty-six years, was closed a week after he was assassinated on May 31, shot in the head at close range. One of his colleagues, Dr. Leroy Carhart, an outspoken advocate for women's rights, has asserted that he will care for Dr. Tiller's patients and continue the provision of late-abortion services, stepping forward to fill the great need left by Tiller's absence. He had worked at Dr. Tiller's clinic, as well as his own clinic in Bellevue, Nebraska. In 1991, his home and barn were burned to the ground in an arson claimed by anti-abortion activists. This spurred Dr. Carhart to devote more of his practice to providing abortions, and to challenge laws restricting abortion access. This brave stance on the part of this 67 yr. old doctor was Operation Rescue's cue to turn all attention to him as their next "target #1." To that end, they have announced their "visit" to Dr. Carhart's clinic the weekend of August 28 and 29 for "rescue outreach" and a "rally for victory," with the aim of closing down his clinic also. They have years of practice conducting this "rescue" outside Dr. Tiller's clinic, using giant grotesque images of gore to harass patients, throngs of hysterical zombies throwing themselves in front of cars, and "counseling" women entering the parking lot by screaming at them, lying about what kind of help they would offer, and doing all this in the name of a hateful brand of Christianity. Read about Dr. Carhart in Newsweek. View the local news coverage of the developing situation here, where the Bellevue, Nebraska police are reported to say "they couldn't promise Carhart would be safe once he leaves" (the clinic).

"Either this killing will succeed in creating a climate where abortion providers cannot do their work and no one else joins them in that work, or it will be answered by growing numbers of people waking up, coming off the sidelines, defending our doctors and our clinics, and reversing the whole dynamic that has led to this situation where not only abortion, but birth control too, is imperiled."

In that spirit, we are mobilizing to go to Nebraska to defend Dr. Carhart and stand up for women's lives at a crucial moment. Even though abortion, one of the most common medical procedures done in the US (over 45 million women have had abortions) is still legal, if we don't stand up for the doctors who provide this health care, we won't actually have this most basic right to decide whether, when, or if we are to be mothers.

Operation Rescue is extremely well-funded; whereas we are not. If you cannot join us in Nebraska at the end of the month, please donate to those who can. A contribution of $100 is enough to sponsor one more person standing between the vicious misogynists traveling from around the Midwest and Dr. Carhart, who bravely intends to keep his clinic open that Saturday. Your donation will make a very concrete difference in whether or not women's lives will be further endangered by this hate-filled movement.

You can donate specifically towards this bus online at chicagoworldcantwait.org or by contacting Michelle Fadeley, DuPage Co. NOW President, and organizer of the Chicagoland area bus traveling to Nebraska at glitterspark37@yahoo.com.

GET ON THE BUS!

There will be at least one bus traveling from Chicago to Nebraska to bring people to the clinic besieged by anti-women, anti-gay Christian right-wingers who, as Dr. Carhart said, "want to put me out of business or kill me, one of the two."

Be there to protect this heroic doctor and stand up for women everywhere. Plans as of today are to leave Chicago Thursday night, arrive in Nebraska Friday morning on Aug. 28th, and leave Saturday night, returning to Chicago very early on Sunday morning Aug. 29th.

Get your ticket now! Email us at chicago@worldcantwait.org, call us at 773-227-2453, PayPal us the money here, or email the DuPage Co. NOW president, Michelle Fadeley at glitterspark37@yahoo.com to pay in person. Contact us asap if you want to go and need a sponsor for the ticket.

Discussion of The Arrest of Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr.--a RACIST OUTRAGE-- and the ensuing Cover-up and Backlash

GatesOn July 16, Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., one of the most recognized African-American intellectuals and personalities in America, was arrested because he objected angrily to being accused of breaking into his own home. He was handcuffed at his home and jailed.

Gates' arrest, and ensuing comments by Barack Obama that racial profiling is "just a fact," set off a furious barrage of attacks from the powers that be against any attempt to call out the arrest of Henry Louis Gates as exactly what it was: a message, backed up by police with guns, handcuffs, and jail cells, that no Black man in America, no matter how successful by the system's own standards, is immune to the "unwritten code" that Black people have to bow and scrape when confronted unjustly by a police officer.

In light of all the bullshit, it is necessary to once again, sort out truth from lies, reality from bullshit, and right from wrong. The ugly reality of the way this system oppresses Black people needs to be fully dragged out into the light of day, and all who oppose injustice need to condemn it unequivocally and build opposition to it. And those who are sick and tired of it need to get into the revolution and understand this SYSTEM has always thrived on the oppression of Black people in one form or another and can never create a society where Black people can truly breathe free, day in and day out-and must be swept aside and replaced with a revolutionary communist society, where all forms of oppression can finally be eliminated.

Join us to get into all this. Read the recent coverage in Revolution:

A DECLARATION: FOR WOMEN'S LIBERATION
AND THE EMANCIPATION OF ALL HUMANITY

Declaration 158 CoverWE DECLARE: NO MORE!
Women need emancipation. Women need liberation from thousands of years of tradition's chains. This is a declaration that stands on the clear recognition that for humanity as a whole to advance, half of humanity must be lifted from centuries of being condemned to being the property of men and pitilessly exploited, demeaned and degraded in a thousand ways. Women are not breeders. Women are not lesser beings. Women are not objects created for the sexual pleasure of men. Women are human beings capable of participating fully and equally in every realm of human endeavor. When women are held down, all of humanity is held back. Women must win liberation, and they can only be liberated through the revolutionary transformation of the world and the emancipation of all of humanity, and through being a powerful motive force in that revolution. Read Declaration.
