Sunday Sept 1, 4pm Revolution Books Hot Topic Discussion

Only Worse Suffering and Horrors Can Result from a U.S. Attack on Syria

There is growing danger of a direct U.S. military attack on Syria-which is being framed as a "surgical strike"-using planes and/or Cruise missiles. U.S. Secretary of "Defense" Hagel announced that "the U.S. military is "ready to go" if ordered to attack Syria.

These attacks must be opposed with determined political protest and clear-eyed understanding of how they would make the situation worse.

Atrocities and War Crimes

The threats come in the wake of reports of hundreds of civilian deaths, apparently from chemical weapons, in a rebel-held suburb of the Syrian capital of Damascus on Wednesday, August 21. Whether the deaths were the result of chemical weapons and, if so, whether the attack was launched by the Syrian government or by rebel forces, has not been independently verified. U.S. Secretary of State Kerry initially demanded that the Syrian government allow UN investigators into the area, but then when the Syrian regime responded that it would give inspectors unlimited access, Reuters reported that: "[A] U.S. official said such an offer was 'too late to be credible' and Washington was all but certain that the government of President Bashar al-Assad had gassed its own people."

But the driving force behind escalated U.S. threats against Syria has little to do with this incident. And it has absolutely nothing to do with humanitarian concerns. It is essential people understand what is behind U.S. moves and not be duped into passive complicity with a U.S. attack on Syria that would be make the situation much worse for the people of Syria, and the world. read more at revcom.us

Thursday, Aug. 29, 7pm  Hermans House Images Join us to watch

Herman's House

a film by Angad Bhalla

(director will not be present)
co-sponsored by Stop Mass Incarceration Network - Chicago and Prisoners Revolutionary Literature Fund

Herman Wallace, Albert Woodfox, and Robert King are the Angola 3, framed for murder while in prison, in retaliation for starting one of the first prison chapters of the Black Panther Party and exposing conditions at Louisiana's Angola Prison. Herman Wallace has spent more than 40 years in a 6-by-9-foot cell, more time in solitary confinement than any other prisoner.

Herman's House is a moving account of the remarkable expression his struggle found in an unusual project proposed by artist Jackie Sumell. Imagining Wallace's "dream home" began as a game and became an interrogation of justice and punishment in America. The film takes us inside the duo's unlikely 12-year friendship, revealing the transformative power of art.

This film sheds light on the brutal conditions of solitary confinement that have given rise to the heroic hunger strike now taking place in California's prisons.

Stand Up for the Courageous
California Prisoner Hunger Strikers!

On July 8, the largest prisoner hunger strike in California history began with over 30,000 prisoners in 22 of the state's 33 prisons refusing food. Hundreds of prisoners continue on the hunger strike, courageously fighting for an end to indefinite solitary confinement and other cruel, inhuman abuses. Yet the California Department of Corrections (CDCR) has refused to even consider their just demands. Instead, prison authorities have retaliated against hunger strikers with further isolation, freezing air, and stealing their food-even denying medicines. Light Refreshments

Momentous and unexpected changes have rocked the world this summer. Everywhere that struggle, turmoil, and jolts have shaken the everyday functioning of this global system of oppression, the big question is objectively posed: Does the world need to be this way? The ruling classes of the world decree the answer is yes. In reality, the answer is HELL NO!
But in order for people to see and act on that, they have to know how the world could be, and what it will take to change things.

They need BA! Because of Bob Avakian (BA) and the work he has done over several decades, there is a revolutionary way out. There is a new synthesis of communism - a viable vision and strategy for a radically new, and much better, world. And there is the crucial leadership to get us there. Engaging BA allows people to identify and dig into the "big questions" concerning the direction of society and the world. And it inspires them to fight for fundamental change and the emancipation of humanity. But still, far too few people know about BA. The BA Everywhere Campaign is determined to change that.

So, if you are someone who wants to make a big difference in the world, join us. Bring family and friends to celebrate a summer of reaching thousands with the film BA Speaks: REVOLUTION-NOTHING LESS! and Bob Avakian (BA), the leader of the Revolutionary Communist Party, his vision and strategy for revolution and a whole better world that's possible.

You are needed and can make a big difference in what kind of future is possible.

Right now Revolution Books is needed more than ever. We are at a potential watershed moment when people are outraged and asking big questions. This summer people across the US took the streets after the system once again declared open season on Black youth with the George Zimmerman verdict. Courageous young whistleblowers face severe punishment for daring to reveal secrets of government crimes. Hunger strikers in Guantanamo and California prison are risking their lives to assert their humanity... and challenging all of society to claim our humanity by standing up against torture. Upheavals erupt across the globe, and now we witness the murderous events in Egypt.

Where will all this go? Help save RB and put it more fully on the map as the place to find the books, programs, and engagement to change the world. Make RB a vibrant center for building a movement for revolution.

This fundraising effort is a step in bringing forward a larger infusion of funds, energy, and commitment to not only keep Revolution Books open, but so it can more powerfully play its role in giving nourishment to a movement of rebellious thinking and rebellious action so needed in the world today. This can happen with your generous support. Everyone can contribute to this effort to save Revolution Books.

Turmoil in Egypt: The Myth of
"People Power" and The REAL Revolution Needed

The military in Egypt, with the backing of the U.S., has staged a coup against the government of Mohamed Morsi. The fact that this coup has support from sizeable sections of people, including from many who have been in the streets, does not make it positive or progressive.
On August 14, 2013, Raymond Lotta spoke at Revolution Books in New York on what is happening in Egypt.

*The delusions and self-delusions of "people power."

*The deadly dynamic thrusting one section of people into supporting the military's actions (and objectively its U.S. backers) and another section into supporting reactionary Islamic fundamentalism.

*But there is another way: communist revolution as reenvisioned by Bob Avakian.

Everywhere that struggle, turmoil and jolts in the functioning of the global system of oppression break out, people need to know how the world could be and what it would take to change things. Essential to that understanding is the promotion of the voice and vision of Bob Avakian (BA), leader of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA.

Come celebrate, and let's build off the momentum so far, drawing in others for the next phase of raising big money to get BA Everywhere!
These last weeks of summer are a time to step up efforts to influence and change the thinking of people all over society. This is a time to build and to join in struggle and resistance to all these outrages. And most important, this is a time to build the movement for revolution and accumulate forces for revolution. read full article

Call up the volunteers. Reserve the vans. Ready the projection and sound equipment to reach hundreds and thousands of people. Rev up the engines for the second week of the Summer 2013 Revolution-Nothing Less! Van Tours to go back on the road at a juncture when people have new ears to hear the music of revolution.
Right now: when people are agonized about what is to be done about a system that justifies the lynching of Black youth...
Right now: when people are wrestling with what is to be done about a system that brutalizes and degrades women and that is rapidly and systematically taking away the right to abortion that enables a woman to be free to decide when and if she will have a child...
Right now: when people are beginning to make the connections between these outrageous crimes and the reality that this is a country that murders people across the globe by remote control, that spies on its entire population, that lets a racist vigilante walk free but unleashes the full thug force of its empire against Bradley Manning, Julian Assange, and Edward Snowden-whistleblowers who have exposed the real war crimes of this government-all while this system relentlessly destroys the planet...
People are grappling with big questions: why do these outrages keep happening, what can be done, and isn't there a better way the world could be? read more at revcom.us.
