Everyone needs to understand the basic facts of evolution as well as the essentials of the scientific method ...When people are deprived of a scientific approach to reality as a whole they are robbed of both a full appreciation of the beauty and richness of the natural world and the means to understand the dynamics of change not only in nature but in human society as well.

The brilliant and colorful visual displays in the centerfold of the book and its accompanying text, are a concentration of this, walking and working through the entire science of evolution, Darwin's breakthrough, with illustrations and examples, and it seems to me was specially designed for precisely the purpose of popularizing the science of evolution for an audience not familiar with this subject matter.

1 Billion Rising Feb 14 Friday
Join us to plan for V-Day

One Billion Rising for Justice is a very positive international manifestation against the abuse of women. It takes place on February 14 this year. The day forges a sense of world-wide community of joyful resistance to what is one of the deepest and most vicious forms of oppression-the brutalization, degradation, denial of the basic humanity of women.

The liberation of women is completely bound up with class society, it is a cornerstone of this system and the liberation of women is a decisive driving force in making revolution and carrying revolution forward to the full and complete emancipation of humanity around the world.

Feb 19, Wednesday             Panther
Movie 7 pm

Panther is a 1995 film directed by Mario Van Peebles, from a screenplay adapted by his father, Melvin Van Peebles, from his novel. The film portrays the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, tracing the organization from its founding through its decline in a compressed time frame. Creative license is taken but the general trajectory of the Party and its experiences is factual.
The film focuses on the rise and decline of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, known as the Black Panthers, during the era of Black Power and disenchantment with passive resistance as a tool in the civil rights movement. It explores the FBI's COINTELPRO program, which was a far-flung effort to track and disrupt African-American political movements

Celebrate the Third Issue of Demarcations
FEB 1 Saturday 4-7 pm
at Revolution Books

Join us for a lively celebration and informal discussion aroundDemarcations. Drop by for refreshments, meet new people at a cafe setting who are coming from different perspectives and grappling with these themes and questions.  Everyone is welcome.

There will be brief opening remarks on the main themes and questions, helping people appreciate why this journal matters. Learn from the international communist movement, from Egypt, the Arab Spring and upsurges halfway around the world.

If you are new to these questions and are checking it out, or have been engaging these issues for sometime, come by, learn more about this movement for revolution and explore Bob Avakian's new synthesis of communism.

Egypt, Tunisia and the Arab Spring: How the Revolts Came to an Impasse and How to Get Out of It
by Samuel Albert

"In the space of a few short years, what seemed like all-powerful regimes have collapsed, uprisings and revolutionary hope have surged again and again, often only to tumble into deeper, paralyzing despair. A bloody civil war has emerged in Syria and
threatens to spread, pitting religious and ethnic groups against each other. The article provides a framework of analysis for the
impasse faced today in these countries, indicating the deeper material roots, what is fundamentally needed in terms of a real revolutionary alternative, and what this would look like."

Egypt 2011: Millions Have Heroically Stood Up...The Future Remains To Be Written
A Statement By Bob Avakian, Chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA

"A public statement from Bob Avakian, released weeks after the fall of Mubarak in Egypt. Avakian hails the upsurge of the people of Egypt and its shattering of the notion that things can never change, and calls for communist leadership to be forged in the midst of and through this uprising to lead the process for the real revolutionary transformation of society and genuine liberation. Recent events have brought the need and relevance of this into even sharper relief." (read more)

12th Anniversary of
Guantanamo

FILM SCREENING  DOCTORS OF THE DARK SIDE
Doctors of the Dark Side exposes the scandal behind the torture scandal - how psychologists and physicians implemented and covered up the torture of detainees in US controlled military prisons.
The stories of four detainees and the doctors involved in their abuse show how essential doctors have been to the torture program. Director Martha Davis (Interrogation Psychologists) spent four years investigating the controversy and produced the documentary with an award-winning team that includes:
Oscar-winners Mark Jonathan Harris (Writer) and Mercedes Ruehl (Narrator), and Emmy-winner Lisa Rinzler (Director of Photography). Editor M. Trevino (Hidden Battles) led the post-production team of the feature length documentary. The Executive Producers are Thea Kerman and Sergio Rothstein. Hermine Muskat (Waiting for Armageddon) is Co-Producer.

"A masterpiece of investigative reporting. As a writer, I admire the way Betty Medgser has explored every angle of this truly extraordinary piece of history and told it with the compelling tension of a detective story. As an American,

I'm grateful to know at last the identities of this improbable crew of brilliant whistle-blowers who are true national heroes. As someone appalled by recent revelations of out-of-control NSA spying, I'm reminded that it has all happened before, and that then, as now, it took rare courage to expose it. This brave group of friends were the Edward Snowdens of their time."

Guantanamo:
12 Years Too Many!

When the Bush regime filled the off-shore prison at Guantanamo Bay with men seized from around the globe, we did not know that torture was being used and that most were turned over for bounty. Now we know. When Barack Obama was elected, he promised to close Guantanamo  within a year...five years ago. But the torture camp at Guantanamo is still open, with new infrastructure and more personnel than ever.  As Shaker Aamer, the last British resident held at Guantanamo, describes their daily humiliations, "National security rides roughshod over human rights." When the prisoners - perhaps the most powerless people in the world - put their lives on the line in a hunger strike for justice - how can we turn our backs and say "There's nothing we can do"? This Friday and Saturday, there is much that you can do!
Friday, January 10, 4:30 PM
Vigil and Procession
We will gather at the Federal Courthouse in Chicago (Dearborn and Jackson) on the 12th Anniversary of the opening of Guantanamo Bay prison to demand an end to indefinite detention and the closure of this torture camp.
Chicago Overpass Light Brigade will join us with bright letters spelling out "Close Gitmo," loud and clear!
We invite you to wear an orange jumpsuit and black hood (provided) and hold a sign to protest "12 years too many!" We will read the names of the 164 men detained indefinitely in Guantanamo. If you are on Facebook, please "join" our event there, and invite friends.

Our witness is more powerful when you join us!

Program begins at 7 PM
Grace Place, 637 S. Dearborn, Chicago

We will then join a discussion with 3 panelists on the current legal and political situation at Guantanamo Bay and what we can do here and now, followed by Q&A:
Candace Gorman, a U.S. attorney for 2 men detained at Guantanamo (one has been released, the other remains in prison), Mario Venegas, an activist and torture survivor from Chile, and Dr. Antonio Martinez from the Institute for Survivors of Torture and Human Rights Abuses and a co-founder of the Marjorie Kovler Center here in Chicago. If you are on Facebook, please "join" this event there, and invite friends.
