Bernard Harcourt, writing in the Opinionator blog of the New York Times, described the Occupy Movement as marking a "political paradigm shift": a new form of "political disobedience" involving a "leaderless" organization refusing to embrace "old ideologies"-whether of free markets or communism. In the editorial, Harcourt specifically engaged Raymond Lotta, an advocate of Bob Avakian's new synthesis of communism, who had recently spoken at Occupy Wall Street. Lotta responded: the question is not whether there will be ideology or leadership, these are in play one way or another, but what kind of ideology and what kind of leadership are needed to overcome oppression and exploitation. The recent police attacks on the Occupy Movement underscore the importance of these questions.

Now the debate continues: come ask questions and participate in this debate and exchange on the Occupy Movement.

Bernard Harcourt is Chairman of the PoliticalScience department and professor of law at the University of Chicago. Heis the author of The Illusion of Free Markets. On Black Friday, the biggest consumer fest of the year, volunteers with the Prisoners Revolutionary Literature Fund and others who are joining the campaign to Raise Big Money to Get BA's Vision and Works into Every Corner of Society (see www.revcom.us) plan to be downtown and possibly other shopping areas.

There will be some creative street theater and we plan to talk with lots of people and raise lots of money! In the words of one prisoner, "I want to urge everybody out there to get their hands on this book and to help get it into the hands of others, not just prisoners, but into the hands of youth in danger of becoming prisoners themselves."

Join us for Black Friday, come for an hour or two, to act, read prisoner quotes, to encourage people to join in and to donate. There will also be a crew going out on Saturday among holiday shoppers to fundraise for BAsics to prisoners. The main-and, up to this point at least, the overwhelming-aspect of these "Occupy" protests has been their very positive thrust: in mobilizing people to stand up against injustice and inequality and the domination of economic, social and political life, and international relations, by a super-rich elite class whose interests are in opposition to those of the great majority of people; and in contributing in significant ways to an atmosphere in which people are raising and wrangling with big questions about the state of society and the world and whether and how something much better can be brought into being. It will be a very good thing if these protests continue to spread and further develop, with this basic thrust and this positive impact. And these "Occupy" protests can be a significant positive factor in contributing to the revolution that is needed-IF this is approached, by those with the necessary scientific communist understanding, in accordance with that understanding and the strategic orientation and approach that flows from it. An extraordinary event has broken out in society. A

breath of fresh air is blowing across the country from the Occupy Wall Street movement to many, many other cities including Occupy Chicago. Revolution Books is calling on everyone to go to Occupy Chicago and stand with these courageous young resisters. We know that many on our email list will be interested in attending or observing this growing movement in action.

These are times when the most fundamental questions are being thrown up and there is openness to hearing about revolutionary solutions that has not existed for years. While people are coming from many different outlooks, there is a great shared feeling that something is terribly wrong in society, and the world, and we are going to do something about it. The essay at the end of Chapter 3 of Bob Avakian's new book BAsics goes into the importance of such moments, that "create situations in which many more people are searching for answers and are open to considering radical change."

This is what can be seen in the Occupy movement, and why it is so important for Revolution Books to support and be part of the mix. Volunteers are needed to help out at both the store and at the Occupy Chicago site. We will be at the Occupy Chicago site from 7-9 pm every night. Come lend a hand, and be part of it. But don't stay home!

On July 1, 2011 inmates at Pelican Bay SHU (Security Housing Unit) began a hunger strike that spread, with over 6,000 joining in prisons across the state. SHU prisoners live in extreme daily isolation for years...even decades...never leaving their prison cell for 23 hours a day. Tens of thousands of prisoners are housed in similar units across the country.

This torture must stop.

Signs indicate that the California Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (CDCR) may attempt to quickly crush or isolate hunger strikers and crack down on other California prisoners to prevent the strike from spreading. This makes it especially crucial that everyone who cares about justice, who opposes torture, mobilize IMMEDIATELY and act in support the hunger strike and the prisoners' demands. We have the moral responsibility to act in a way commensurate with the justness of the prisoners' demands and the urgency of the situation. After seeing the state MURDER Troy Davis what does it say about our humanity if we don't?

This horrible system brings horrors down on the people. And late Wednesday night, at 11:08 p.m. this system executed Troy Davis for the death of a policeman in Savannah, Georgia in 1989. This was nothing but a legal lynching.

In the face of compelling evidence of Troy’s innocence, the governor signed his death warrant. Then at the last minute, after the execution had been delayed for over three hours, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to stop the killing.

This is a complete and utter outrage and people have been taking to the streets to protest this enormous crime by the system.

EYES ON THE PRIZE

September 9th - 13th will be the 40th anniversary of the Attica prison rebellion in New York, and the police massacre of 43 prisoners and guards. Forty years ago, the men locked down in Attica rose in rebellion demanding to be treated like human beings.

Like those in the yard, the prisoners' leadership included Blacks, Puerto Ricans, Native Americans and whites... Debate and discussion flourished in small groups and mass meetings. An observer from the New York Times wrote, 'The racial harmony that prevailed among the prisoners...was absolutely astonishing,' and a prisoner reflected, 'I actually cried, it was so close, everyone was so together.' The rebelling prisoners issued a statement 'To the People of America' and they struggled over huge questions like exacting revenge for all they had suffered. 'These things [previous grievances with prison guards now held hostage] became obsolete in my mind because something much higher was at stake.'"

Their heroic actions and the way they conducted themselves showed that people who had been condemned as the "worst of the worst" could rise above the muck and mire, and transform themselves in ways that pointed to the possibility of radical social change.

The memory of Attica is something people, especially young people, need to know about today. This legacy counters justifications given for warehousing 2.4 million plus in jails across the U.S. today. It could spark discussion and debate over whether those locked down today are common criminals, or even "monsters" who deserve to be locked in these dungeons, or the victims of a new system of social control.

Each $10 Donation will enable Prisoners Revolutionary Literature Fund to send a copy of "BAsics, from the talks and writings of Bob Avakian" to a prisoner.

Revolution Books is taking part in an exciting campaign to get out 100,000 copies nationwide of the Special Issue of Revolution newspaper to "Shake Up And Wake Up the Campus." This 8-page all-color issue of Revolution newspaper is introducing thousands of students to BAsics, the new book of quotations and essays by Bob Avakian which is a handbook of revolution.

At this moment the world needs and is ready for BAsics - as a critical and leading edge of a whole revolutionary ensemble to crack things open, to spark and foster much-needed intellectual ferment, to shake up and wake up the campuses, and to forge a revolutionary pole and a different ethos. The campuses need to be a real strength of the movement for revolution and infect the whole society with ferment over ideas. This effort is jump-starting a process where tens of thousands of youth are introduced to Bob Avakian. Read the whole plan...

A Plan to Shake Up and Wake Up the Campus

100,000 Run of a Special Issue of Revolution Newspaper onBAsics

Join us Saturday August 20 from 5-7 pm for an important presentation and discussion ofa bold new plan to "Shake up and Wake Up the Campuses" that is featured in the current issue of Revolutionnewspaper. Pizza and refreshments will follow the program.

This week's Revolution Newspaper #243, has concrete ideas on HOW this should and could come down. We want to hear all kinds of ideas to feed into these plans. Your thinking and input on this is most welcome, most needed. Especially we want to hear from students and recent students-including those who may have checked out the movement for revolution for a time and decided to step away from it, at least for awhile.

The following Monday, Revolution #244 will publish a special 8-page all-color issue that will introduce people to BAsics. This issue will focus on quotes from BAsics and quotes from people who have read BAsics and have something to say about it. 100,000 will be published to take out--with a major emphasis on the weeks from August 24 to September 7--to get them out in a massive way, mainly focused on college campuses and some emphasis on high schools as well. Come pick up bundles of Revolution Newspaper from 3-7 pm August 22.

We plan to saturate areas and jump-start a process whereby tens of thousands of youth are introduced to Bob Avakian--raw and uncut - where different levels of engagement with what he's all about and what he has to say can get underway. One big part of this must be asignificant number of actual sales of BAsics itself, so that people's engagement can deepen and grow richer over time.

REPORT FROM THE SOUTH SIDE

Revolution Books, BAsics and Stolen Lives

at the Bud Billiken Parade

The annual back to school Bud Billiken parade is the largest African American parade in the US. This year Revolution Books sponsored a highly successful contingent taking a bold uncompromising stand against the murderous police rampage.

It featured revolutionaries, Stolen Lives family and friends whose loved ones have been shot or killed by the police. A parent of a recently killed youth led carrying a huge red flag followed by a large banner of Basics from the talks and writings of Bob Avakian. The contingent punctured the suffocating atmosphere of the recent police rampage of 42 people shot in 2011, the most recent, a thirteen year old shot 4 times! Many had no idea the number of people shot and killed.(see Chicago Police on a Murderous Rampage in revcom.us)

A large Stolen Lives banner featured pictures of many people killed by the Chicago police. The response from the crowd was tremendous-fists in the air, cheers and people chanting along with "Indict, Convict, Send the killer cops to jail - The whole damn system is Guilty as Hell".

Family members, their friends and kids, wearing Revolution t-shirts and t-shirts in memory of loved ones killed by police , were hugged by people along the sidelines. They felt strengthened as well as deeply moved by the response of the crowd. People in the crowd reached out for fliers and Revolution newspapers. Bikes decorated with pictures of stolen lives tied onto the handlebars weaved in and out of the contingent in defiance of the cops.

In a very sharp way the quote from Bob Avakian in Basics came alive. "IT IS TIME FOR US TO WAKE UP. The days when this system can just keep on doing what it does to people, here and all over the world...when people are not inspired and organized to stand up against these outrages and to build up the strength to put an end to this madness...those days must be GONE. And they CAN be."

Chicago Police on a Murderous Rampage:

42 people shot in 2011

We Say NO MORE!

The Chicago police have shot 42 people this year, almost double the rate of 2010, and brutalized many more. Chicago – home of the first Black president – is gunning down Black and minority youth in the streets. Chicago – host in May 2012 of world leaders for the G8 and NATO – is gunning down Black youth in the streets. The police chief justifies this by painting the victims as thugs who “pull out guns and shoot at police officers... with wanton disregard.” This is a bald-faced lie to cover up the extreme brutality and murder of an occupying army let loose on communities of the oppressed. Look at two of the most recent police shootings:

Jimmell Cannon is 13 years old. He just finished 6th grade. You couldn’t ask for a nicer kid. One of his teachers told the Chicago Sun Times: “He’s a doll. This is a kid who made more improvements in one year than any other student.” (7/27/11) On July 26, Jimmell was with family and friends at a birthday party at a west side park when the police rolled up, claiming to respond to “shots being fired in the area." The police claimed that Jimmell ran and aimed a BB gun at them so they shot him 8 times! These cowards shot a child 8 times!

Eyewitnesses said Jimmell never had a BB gun. Plus 2 of the shots hit Jimmell’s open hands – one ripping through his palm, the other blowing off a finger – something that could only happen if his hands were in the air as eyewitnesses said. Additional shots tore through his body, including his buttock, which could only happen if his back was turned – hardly a position from which he would have been threatening the police. The evidence completely contradicts the cop’s story. 13 years old! Who indeed is shooting with “wanton disregard”? The police!

Three hours earlier on the west side, the police claim that they stopped Joe Banks, 21, and he pulled a gun, so they shot him. Again, nothing but lies. Witnesses tell of cops swarming into the neighborhood. All of a sudden they took out after Joe, who didn’t seem to even realize that the cops were after him because he was just trotting along holding up his pants. Witnesses say a cop coasted up on his bicycle behind Joe, pulled out a gun and shot him in the back, barely missing his heart. Cops cuffed him and jumped on his back so hard that they broke 2 of his ribs.There was no gun. The cops then beat and arrested 3 of Joe’s family for daring to yell that the police had “done wrong”!

These are not exceptions. Woodlawn, June 2011: JonRynn Avery bled to death in his own bathroom after the police chased him through the plate glass front door of his house. Englewood, June 2011: Flint Farmer was killed in a hail of police bullets; they claimed his cell phone was a gun. The list goes on over the years and across the country. Thousands of stolen lives.

We say NO MORE! "No more generations of our youth, here and all around the world, whose life is over, whose fate has been sealed, who have been condemned to an early death or a life of misery and brutality, whom the system has destined for oppression and oblivion even before they are born. I say no more of that."

To enforce the relations of exploitation and oppression, the conditions of poverty, misery and degradation into which the system has cast people and is determined to keep people in. Pelican Bay Hunger Strike Into Third Week

Outpouring of Support Needed Now!

Prisoners at the Security Housing Unit (SHU) at Pelican Bay State Prison have been on a hunger strike since July 1-demanding an end to what amounts to torture and brutally inhumane conditions. The weekend of July 2-3, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) reported that 6,600 prisoners, in 13 different prisons, refused food in solidarity with the strike. And there has been growing support on the outside from people who are demanding that the CDCR meet the prisoners' demands.

The 13th day of the strike, alarming, urgent reports started coming out that the medical condition of some of the prisoners was at a severe crisis. (Read full text of The Humanity and Courage of the Prisoners...And the Moral Responsibility to Support Their Demands .)

At the July 14 emergency meeting at Revolution Books in New York City on the Pelican Bay hunger strike, participants discussed the need to heighten awareness and support for the hunger strike among people on the outside to a new level - as part of forcing prison officials to meet the prisoners' demands. One idea that came up was to contact prominent people, calling on them to write support statements and use their voice to spread the word. A letter was quickly written and sent out the next day. The following are initial statements written in response. More statements are urgently needed from other artists, public intellectuals, and prominent voices of conscience and should be sent to revbooksnyc@yahoo.com.

-- Support of prisoners on hunger strike at Pelican Bay & other California prisons: come by Revolution Books to share your ideas or pick up copies of Revolution newspaper; help spread Revolution's coverage online; work with us at the store or from home to do outreach to solicit statements of support, contact media with news of the hunger strike, or help organize local protests.

-- Work with the Revolution Books book table at the Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed conference (July 20-23) where 300 educators, artists and activists will be talking about enabling people to think critically and and confront injustice. We will be doing the general bookselling for the conference, getting out BAsics, and organizing support for the hunger strike.

-- Help mail out Revolution newspaper subscriptions to prisoners this Monday July 25 from 3-7pm (and every Monday a new issue is published).

From Prison Hunger Strike Solidarity: More on Medical Crisis, Need Support Pressuring Immediate Negotiations

Legal representatives made visits to Pelican Bay SHU Tuesday and interviewed a number of hunger strikers. Each prisoner explained how medical conditions of hundreds of hunger strikers in the SHU are worsening. Many prisoners are experiencing irregular heartbeats and palpitations, some are suffering from diagnosed cardiac arrhythmia. Many are also experiencing dizziness and constantly feel light-headed. Many struggle with shortness of breath and other lung and respiratory problems. Dozens of prisoners have fainted and been taken to either the infirmary and/or outside hospitals. Some prisoners also have Crohn's disease, which leads to extreme loss of fluids and electrolytes and needs to be treated by adequate nutrition and hydration.

This PHSS statement concludes with:

Clearly the prisoners are in dire need of adequate food and hydration. The only way to prevent people from dying right now is for the CDCR to negotiate with the prisoners with the outside mediation team the prisoners have approved of.Support the Prisoners in Winning their Demands! Prisoner hunger strikers at Corcoran SHU urge people to:

"Call or email your local TV station; blog about it on the web; organize support at your local church, mosque, temple, synagogue, or community center; contact your Congressman, Alderman, or local legislature; write and call the governor. Oppose the continued use, expansion and broadening of those psychological torture units in your nation." (See Update from Corcoran.)

Far too few people even know this heroic hunger strike is happening.

Solidarity Rally at Cook County Courthouse:

On July 12 people rallied at the Cook County Courthouse in Chicago in support of the hunger strikers at Pelican Bay Prison. Participants included Mark Clements, who spent 28 years in prison after being tortured into a confession, Fred Hampton, Jr., and Revolution newspaper distributors. More protests are being planned.
