Classroom Censorship in Texas

On September 2, the Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 3, the classroom censorship bill that is the second attempt by conservative Texas lawmakers to control historical narratives and limit classroom discussions about race and discrimination.

The first attempt was House Bill 3979, which passed into law and became effective in early September. Texas is spearheading and modeling how to achieve what this movement has wanted for decades, to get into a position of what they hope will be un-challengeable political power.

This podcase was uploaded October 17: RefuseFascism.org editor Coco Das (@coco_das) interviews Ana Ramón (@ana_ramon89), Director of Advocacy for the Intercultural Development Research Association (IDRA) about the new legislation that takes aim at anti-racist and truthful teaching of social studies and other subjects for students in Texas.

Ana Ramon:

The very overt racial atmospherics around this bill and linking it specifically to anti- voting rights… I have never seen the amount of legislative deviations take place on one bill than I have seen for this bill… They literally introduced new rules in the Senate to get this bill passed… This is exactly on trend when it comes to oppressing communities of color or diverse communities from trying to move out of the boxes that they’ve been placed in.

Coco Das:
We’ve been studying this fascist movement and the interest in what you’re calling the legislative deviations, because one of the features of fascism is how it tears up the rules and norms. That’s something that Trump was very effective at. People learn from that. The very norms that people were relying on, the normal channels that people were relying on to stop these outrages, were being torn up. The rule book was being torn up. You had one side, the Democrats who were really playing by the rules, and you had the other side, this Trump’s GOP, this thoroughly hollowed-out party, that’s willing to tear up all the rules and be bad faith actors in getting their agenda passed.

To END Police Terror, Women's Oppression, Plunder Of The Environment... We Need To END THIS SYSTEM!

In this episode Andy Zee comments on the recently released body camera footage that captures Minneapolis cops "hunting activists" as they viciously shoot rubber bullets at protesters in the days after the murder of George Floyd.

An excerpt from a speech by Bob Avakian goes deep into why terror and murder of Black people and other people of color is necessary in order for this system of capitalism-imperialism to function.

Andy Zee and Sunsara Taylor discuss the Abortion Rights Emergency, looking at the legal challenges to the Texas law and what all this means and what must be done to get to a world where women are treated as full human beings!

And with the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow happening at the end of October, we bring you the segment we did last month entitled: "New UN IPCC Report on Climate Change: A More Accurate & Alarming Picture of Peril Facing Our Planet".

A few days after the Supreme Court refused to block the extreme Texas abortion ban, Sam Goldman (@SamBGoldman), Coco Das (@Coco_Das) and Sunsara Taylor (@SunsaraTaylor) discuss the roots and ramifications of this dangerous new law. All abortions, without exception for rape or incest, are now illegal just two weeks after a first missed period; plus vigilantes are incentivized to hunt down not only those who seek abortions but anyone who assists, down to the taxi driver who may have given a woman a ride to the clinic.

Read Coco Das’s writings at RefuseFascism.org including her recent piece Genocidal and Deadly Serious: Dan Patrick, Texas Fascist Lunatic Scapegoats Black People for the Pandemic. Sunsara Taylor co-hosts The RNL Show on YouTube and We Only Want The World on WBAI and WPFW.

For more legal analysis of the law and the effect of the US Supreme Court in refusing to block this unconstitutional law that directly violates Roe V. Wade, listen to the recent episode of Amicus with Dahlia Lithwick: Abortion, Surveillance, and Vigilantism: An American Story

In Episode 73: Bob Avakian on Revenge vs. Emancipation! Plus, Cornel West and Andy Zee on the 60 year anniversary of Franz Fanon's The Wretched of the Earth. And sights and sounds from the Women's March for Abortion Justice and the need for mass resistance and revolution, NOT relying on elections and the system. In this rare time when revolution could be ripened and made in the U.S. imperialist citadel... when so many around the world suffer so needlessly as a result of this system of capitalism-imperialism... and when many are looking for a way out of this nightmare... we bring you crucial guidance and leadership, as well as debate and discussion. An excerpt of a speech from Bob Avakian, the most important political leader and thinker on the planet, speaks to why revenge must not guide the revolution but instead must be rooted in the emancipation of ALL humanity. Then, we present a major exchange between Cornel West and Andy Zee on the occasion of the 60th Anniversary of Frantz Fanon's The Wretched of the Earth. This Revolution Books NYC event, produced in partnership with the Brooklyn Book Festival, featured Cornel West, who wrote the introduction for this new edition of the book, in conversation with Andy Zee, host of The RNL Show. This took place at Revolution Books NYC on September 29, 2021. It was a packed house that spilled into the street with outdoor seating and it was Livestreamed. Watch the full event here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIrFc... Co-host Sunsara Taylor returns to the abortion rights emergency. She brings some sights and sounds from the march, highlighting the impact and revolutionary clarity brought by the BREAK ALL THE CHAINS! Unleash the Fury of Women As A Mighty Force For Revolution! contingents organized by the Revcoms. She also calls out the danger of the strategy put forward by the main Women's March leaders of relying on this system's elections, calling instead for mass, sustained resistance and organizing for an actual revolution.
