The April 7, 2009 event at Columbia College was an extraordinary exchange on the idea of god and the role of religion. Is religion a creation of humanity whose time has long passed? Or does it serve some deeper need of human beings or point to some deeper reality? Are beliefs in gods obstacles or pathways to understanding and changing the world and to the emancipation of humanity? Speakers: Stephen Asma, Ph.D., is professor of philosophy and humanities at Columbia College Chicago. He is a science writer, Buddhist, and author of The Gods Drink Whiskey; Stumbling toward Enlightenment in the Land of the Tattered Buddha (Harper SanFrancisco, 2005). Bob Bossie, SCJ, is a member of the international Catholic order of Priests of the Sacred Heart and a staff member of the 8th Day Center for Justice in Chicago, where he works on issues of peace, human rights, economic justice and non-violence. A founding member of Voices in the Wilderness, Bob has spoken widely and traveled to Iraq and Latin America. Sunsara Taylor writes for Revolution Newspaper, the voice of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA. She is part of a national campus tour to promote the 2008 book, Away With All Gods! Unchaining the Mind and Radically Changing the World, by Revolutionary Communist Party Chairman Bob Avakian (Insight Press). Taylor has been featured in/on The New York Times, The O'Reilly Factor, and CNN's Showbiz Tonight.
