Saturday, February 20, 2:00 pm - Systematic Closings of Black Movie Theaters: Racism and Capitalism Meet in 1970s Chicago
Join author Gerald R. Butters discussing his new book, From Sweetback to Super Fly: Race and Film Audiences in Chicago's Loop. Butters exposes how red lining, segregation, and racism in the Chicago Loop shaped the response to the rise of Black-themed theaters in the 1970s. Their subsequent fall was not the product of the "free market." On the contrary, Butters documents a concerted effort by the business establishment and the first Daley administration to shut down every last one of these theaters.
Gerald R. Butters, Jr. is Dean of General Education and the Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Aurora University.
