Day of Outrage and Direct Action! Justice
for Laquan!

Event by

SOUL - Southsiders Organized for Unity and Liberation,   Black Lives Matter Chicago and   Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression

Public   Anyone on or off Facebook Facebook event here
On February 3rd, Jason Van Dyke, the killer cop who murdered Laquan McDonald, is set to be released from prison after serving only four years. The movement fought for years to get Van Dyke behind bars, and we will not let him walk free after murdering a teenager. We gather with a broad coalition of organizations to demand the U.S. Attorney and the Department of Justice indict Jason Van Dyke at the federal level. We will gather at Federal Plaza at 3:30 PM on February 3rd for a Day of Outrage and Direct Action to deliver these demands and let the powers that be know: we will not stand by while our loved ones and community members are kidnapped, tortured, brutalized, and murdered with impunity. If you're able to attend, please register at the link below so we can keep you up to date on the details of this action:  bit.ly/Justice4Laquan

Received from Refuse Fascism

Episode 96 Uploaded January 30: Coco Das interviews Dr. Anthony DiMaggio, author of the new book, Rising Fascism in America (order from Routledge here), Associate Professor of Political Science at Lehigh University. His research emphasizes the interactions between politics, social movements, the news media, and the American right. He previously appeared on episode 27: Our System is Not Equipped to Deal With a Bad Actor Like Trump.

+ Voices from the launch of Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights on the 49th anniversary of Roe V. Wade January 22: Sunsara Taylor, Lori Sokol, Merle Hoffman and Katea Stitt.

Anthony DiMaggio: There is a movement in America which includes tens of millions of people in the modern Republican Party and Donald Trump, increasingly, that is very neo-fascistic in its politics. The big consequence here is that if we can't have an open, clear, critical discussion about the problem of rising fascism, then people can't recognize the severity of threat. If we don't come to terms with how dangerous this is, then it can just happen and then people don't realize it until it's too late. We need to have a mass movement where people recognize in advance the danger and we work to roll it back.

Comment from A. H. MD, a listener: I have been listening to the Refuse Fascism podcast since early December, now catching up on some of the earlier episodes, all of which are very interesting.   Today's episode with Coco Das and Dr. Anthony DiMaggio was really good. I appreciated his knowledge of historical right-wing media influence on the development of the christofascist movement, something that is crucial to the understanding of how we came to be in this crisis.

From RiseUp4AbortionRights.org:

On March 8, International Women’s Day, we come back with creativity and growing numbers in small towns and the big cities, filling the streets with serious determination and rebellious joy. We will puncture the stifling atmosphere of capitulation to a great injustice and compel all to take notice, inspiring more people to join us. We start organizing now.

Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights Launches
Upcoming events
In a bleak landscape of quiet despair and open capitulation, resounding determination to Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights burst on the scene last Saturday, at the Supreme Court, on the anniversary of the Roe decision that decriminalized abortion. And Refuse Fascism was part of the kick off. Watch videos of key speeches, check out media coverage, and see how our people stood their ground against fascist thugs, and be inspired to sign the statement and join this movement!

First National Organizing Meeting to Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights
Register now for the first national organizing meeting, this Sunday, January 30, at 1 pm CST. Wherever you are, whatever skills or time you have, if you refuse to let the Supreme Court deny women's rights and decimate their humanity, you are invited, you're needed, and you will be vital to this goal. Every. single. person. matters!

Jan 30 Zoom Organizing Conference
Defend Roe! Teach-in
Here in the Chicago area, our chapter of Refuse Fascism co-sponsored a virtual teach-in initiated by Chicago for Abortion Rights to mark the anniversary of Roe by confronting the dire status of abortion access right now, what is means to "Defend Roe!" and what it will take to do that. Defend RoeSpeakers included Dr. Barbara Roberts, physician and abortion rights activists, Derenda Hancock of the Pinkhouse Defenders of the Jackson Women's Health Organization, and more. We highly recommend the video on the website of Haymarket Books, also one of the event's co-sponsors.

Monday Jan 31 Virtual Discussion:The Ideology Behind a "Benevolent" US Theocracy
Kathryn Joyce: The Ideology of Benevolent Theocracy This week on the Refuse Fascism podcast, Sam Goldman interviews author and investigative reporter Kathryn Joyce on the power of ideology in the fascist movement; especially how and why Hungary is a model for the GOP. Listen to their discussion (or read the transcript), read Kathryn's latest piece for Salon, "Parental rights' started on the Christian fringe, now it's the GOP's winning issue," and join us Monday, January 31 at 7 pm for a virtual discussion. Just email us for the zoom link.

January 27 is Holocaust Remembrance Day What does Holocaust Remembrance Day mean when "Never Again" is now? Fascist mobs are threatening school boards and teachers, librarians, election officials, nurses andVideo: Trivailizing the Holocaust public health officials, and meeting far too little resistance. This is not just happening in some "deep red" state but right here. Last Sunday in Highland Park, anti-science, anti-mask, anti-vax MAGA thugs protested mandatory compliance with public health mandates by comparing it to the Holocaust. We are proud and inspired by the people who stood up to them, greatly outnumbered, and hope you will be too, and join us in refusing to accept a fascist America in the name of humanity. Please watch and share their video.

Sunday, January 30, 4pm EST / 1pm PST
An online program
Mansoor Adayfi, Andy Worthington
and Shelby Sullivan-Bennis
speaking on
America's Torture Chamber:
20 Years of Guantanamo...
It Must Be Closed NOW!

Watch here on Jan 30 at 4pm EST/ 1pm PST

Register for event on Eventbrite.
Mansoor Adayfi, an innocent man who was detained without charge for 15 years in Guantanamo, is the author of a new memoir Don't Forget Us Here: Lost and Found at Guantanamo, published in August 2021. Mansoor is a citizen of Yemen but upon his release from Guantanamo, he was sent to Serbia - a place Mansoor describes as "Guantanamo 2.0."
Andy Worthington, British journalist and co-founder of CloseGuantanamo.org. Andy is internationally known for exposing the horrors of the Guantanamo detention camp, and bringing to light the true stories of the men detained.
Shelby Sullivan-Bennis, a lawyer for Guantanamo prisoners and victims of U.S. drone strikes outside of war zones, will also speak on Sunday.
Sunday's program will feature a video performance of a short piano piece by composer-guitarist Luis McDougal entitled "Homage to Abu." It is dedicated to Abu Zubaydah who has been repeatedly tortured and remains detained without charge at Guantanamo (for 20 years).
<-- Abu Zubaydah: "I was told...that I was one of the first to receive these interrogation techniques, so no rules applied. It felt like they were experimenting and trying out techniques to be used later on other people."
January 2022 marks the 20th year since the Guantanamo torture colony was set up. Joe Biden is the fourth president—two Democrats and two Republicans—to preside over a facility whose torture practices have been, for two decades, an extreme violation of U.S. and international law.

In January 2002, President George W. Bush created the military prison within the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba. The vast majority of those held there from its beginnings were picked up without any incriminating evidence. Guantanamo prison is a shameful icon of torture, including water boarding, and of indefinite detention without charge or trial. It violates basic human rights -- and has been a tool of U.S. imperialism’s “wars without end” in the Middle East, Central Asia, and Africa.

Read revcom.us for more on Guantanamo.
