Terry Bisson's visionary novel imagines John Brown succeeding in the assault on the Harper's Ferry arsenal, unleashing a slave rebellion in 1859 that overthrows slavery and establishes the socialist Black nation of Nova Africa in the liberated South. Nova Africa's second Mars expedition is set to touch down on the red planet when one of its scientists discovers the letters of a teenage ex-slave telling how he fought in John Brown's guerrilla army. Join us to explore this "might-have-been" history and future possibilities.
