PEOPLE OF CONSCIENCE MUST ACT!!

Support the Just Demands of the California Security Housing Unit (SHU) Prisoners

"More African-American men are in prison or jail, on probation or parole than were enslaved in 1850, before the Civil War began."
Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow, Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness

On July 1, 2011 inmates at Pelican Bay SHU (Security Housing Unit) began a hunger strike that spread, with over 6,000 joining in prisons across the state.  SHU prisoners live in extreme daily isolation for years...even decades...never leaving their prison cell for 23 hours a day.  Tens of thousands of prisoners are housed in similar units across the country.

Pelican Bay protest
This torture must stop.

Signs indicate that the California Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (CDCR) may attempt to quickly crush or isolate hunger strikers and crack down on other California prisoners to prevent the strike from spreading. This makes it especially crucial that everyone who cares about justice, who opposes torture, mobilize IMMEDIATELY and act in support the hunger strike and the prisoners' demands.  We have the moral responsibility to act in a way commensurate with the justness of the prisoners' demands and the urgency of the situation.  After seeing the state MURDER Troy Davis what does it say about our humanity if we don't?

Monday, Oct 10, 7pm  -  A performance lecture

by avant garde composer and pianist, George Flynn
At Chopin Theatre, 1543 W. Division, Chicago

"Music with a Conscience
the Protest Music of George Flynn"

A performance lecture by avant garde composer and pianist, George Flynn with special guest,  Joanna Wernette, mezzo soprano.  George Flynn has composed over 150 works in all media, including six hours of piano solo music, and has recorded for Turnabout, ATCO, Finnadar, Wounded Bird, and Southport records. Flynn's 50-minute piano solo Pieces of Night was performed at Tanglewood this summer.

This evening of live performance, recorded music, and discussion with the audience is a benefit to raise funds to produce a film of the April 11th event, "On the Publication of BAsics, a Celebration of Revolution and the Vision of a New World." A reception will follow

The film is of the April 11, 2011 celebration in New York City where hundreds of people of diverse ages, backgrounds, and political perspectives came together in one place for an evening of jazz, funk, soul, rock, theater, dance, poetry, visual arts commentary, and film. All of it aching for, giving voice to, and infused with the possibility of a radically different world than the maddening planet we live on now. All of it unleashed by-and cohered around-the occasion of the publication of BAsics, a comprehensive yet succinct new  book of quotations and short essays by Bob Avakian, the Chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA.

"Music with a Conscience" is being co-sponsored by the Chopin Theatre and Revolution Books.
$10.00 general public, $5.00 for students and seniors

Condemn the
Legal Lynching of Troy Davis

The Whole Damn System is Guilty!

Fight the Power, and Transform the People,
for R
evolution

"The whole point of principle is that you have to fight for it when it is not easy to do. There is no need for principle if the only time it is applied is when it doesn't matter."
BAsics, from the talks and writings of Bob Avakian, 5:3

Posted Thursday September 22, 2011

This horrible system brings horrors down on the people. And late Wednesday night, at 11:08 p.m. this system executed Troy Davis for the death of a policeman in Savannah, Georgia in 1989. This was nothing but a legal lynching.

In the face of compelling evidence of Troy’s innocence, the governor signed his death warrant. Then at the last minute, after the execution had been delayed for over three hours, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to stop the killing.

This is a complete and utter outrage and people have been taking to the streets to protest this enormous crime by the system.

Stay tuned to Revolution for coverage and analysis.

and High Schools of the Oppressed
Saturday 9/17, 12:00pm - Gather at Revolution Books 1103 N. Ashland
After a short orientation we will be going to Chicago's south side for this day of special effort.
Join us as we take special REVOLUTION issue 244 into the communities of the oppressed. Fan out on the streets, the bodegas and small shops, the barbershops and beauty parlors, the community centers and churches, the supermarkets and mini-malls, the soup kitchens and shelters, the subways and bus stops...
everywhere people are.

In the past few weeks, nearly 100,000 copies of the special issue #244 on the book BAsics, from the Talks and Writings and Bob Avakianhave gone out on college campuses. Hundreds of copies of the book have been sold. Hundreds of e-subs to REVOLUTION have been garnered off this effort. New people have engaged with the work of Bob Avakian and the movement for revolution, and some have gotten actively involved. And, as the accompanying article says, we are doubling down on this effort on the campuses in the week of September 14-20....

Tuesday Sept. 13 at 7:00 pm
ON THE 40th ANNIVERSARY OF THE ATTICA REBELLION

FEATURING FILM CLIPS FROM   Attica rebellion
DISTURBING THE UNIVERSE AND
EYES ON THE PRIZE

September 9th - 13th will be the 40th anniversary of the Attica prison rebellion in New York, and the police massacre of 43 prisoners and guards. Forty years ago, the men locked down in Attica rose in rebellion demanding to be treated like human beings.

Like those in the yard, the prisoners' leadership included Blacks, Puerto Ricans, Native Americans and whites... Debate and discussion flourished in small groups and mass meetings. An observer from the New York Times wrote, 'The racial harmony that prevailed among the prisoners...was absolutely astonishing,' and a prisoner reflected, 'I actually cried, it was so close, everyone was so together.' The rebelling prisoners issued a statement 'To the People of America' and they struggled over huge questions like exacting revenge for all they had suffered. 'These things [previous grievances with prison guards now held hostage] became obsolete in my mind because something much higher was at stake.'"

Their heroic actions and the way they conducted themselves showed that people who had been condemned as the "worst of the worst" could rise above the muck and mire, and transform themselves in ways that pointed to the possibility of radical social change.

The memory of Attica is something people, especially young people, need to know about today. This legacy counters justifications given for warehousing 2.4 million plus in jails across the U.S. today. It could spark discussion and debate over whether those locked down today are common criminals, or even "monsters" who deserve to be locked in these dungeons, or the victims of a new system of social control.

Each $10 Donation will enable Prisoners Revolutionary Literature Fund to send a copy of "BAsics, from the talks and writings of Bob Avakian" to a prisoner.
