NOTE: Change in hours for Saturday February 6, 2016--
We will be open from 10am to noon
We will be closed from noon to 5pm so that everyone can attend
the special meeting on the 6 resolutions

Wednesday, January 27, 2016

You Are Invited to...
...an important meeting to discuss six historic resolutions from the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA

These resolutions come at a time when the oppression faced by billions of people is increasingly unbearable, when resistance is flaring up, but when the need is acutely posed for leadership which genuinely enables people to understand the causes of that oppression and to act to uproot and transform it.

Revolutionary communism is the scientific understanding of the kind of radically different and radically better world that IS possible and how to get there. These resolutions focus on the leap in that scientific understanding that has been forged by Bob Avakian and on the overall leadership he provides and models--and what that means for humanity.

The Party is holding meetings across the country to discuss the content of these resolutions. Come, be part of digging into what these resolutions mean and help figure out how to spread their message further.

Communism Or Nationalism?

By the Revolutionary Communist Organization (OCR), Mexico,Demarcations-Journal.org, Issue 4, Winter 2015

Join the discussion! This polemic draws out the nationalism that runs through attacks on a critical component of the new synthesis of communism that Bob Avakian (BA) has developed: internationalism. BA has not only upheld but also deepened the understanding of proletarian internationalism. More specifically, he has profoundly conceptualized the relationship between the world arena and revolution in any single country, and the tasks of communists in both the imperialist countries and oppressed nations.

The OCR of Mexico raises several key questions in their polemic:
  • Is the fundamental problem, and its solution, found essentially within the borders of each country? Is the possibility of breaking free of capitalism-imperialism determined more by the characteristics of each nation or by the world system and struggle internationally?
  • Is there a world system, and is a world revolutionary process needed to overcome it?
  • Does achieving a radically different and liberating future require being the best representatives of the people or the proletariat of one's own nation, or does it require being representatives of the emancipation of humanity?
  • Should revolutionaries in the third world aspire simply to the liberation of our nation, or to the elimination of class distinctions and all forms of oppression in the entire world?
"The achievement of [the necessary conditions for communism] must take place on a world scale, through a long and tortuous process of revolutionary transformation in which there will be uneven development, the seizure of power in different countries at different times, and a complex dialectical interplay between the revolutionary struggles and the revolutionization of society in these different countries...[a dialectical relation] in which the world arena is fundamentally and ultimately decisive while the mutually interacting and mutually supporting struggles of the proletarians in different countries constitute the key link in fundamentally changing the world as a whole."

My Life, My Body is a collection of essays by poet and novelist Marge Piercy. In the title essay, she vividly recounts the perils (personal and public) of a woman's life before Roe v Wade.

An early anti-war activist in the 1960s, Piercy expanded her vision to feminism, then literature, becoming a best-selling novelist without abandoning the radical politics that set her on her path. Join us to discuss the title essay of this volume; get your copy for $12 at Revolution Books.

WEDNESDAY JANUARY 20, 7 PM
Revolution Books invites you to a celebration of the on-line release of the major new work--
"The Science, the Strategy, the Leadership for an Actual Revolution, and a Radically New Society on the Road to Real Emancipation"
by Bob Avakian,
Chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA

In summer 2015, Bob Avakian (BA) gave a presentation to a gathering of some members and supporters of the RCP, including some people in the Revolution Clubs. The text of that presentation is now available online.

"Because of Bob Avakian and the work he has done over several decades, summing up the positive and negative experience of the communist revolution so far, and drawing from a broad range of human experience, there is a new synthesis of communism that has been brought forward--there really is a viable vision and strategy for a radically new, and much better, society and world, and there is the crucial leadership that is needed to carry forward the struggle toward that goal."  --revcom.us

This new work--and the new synthesis of communism brought forward by BA overall--is crucial to human emancipation. The title of the new work gives a sense of its range and sweep. This work is for everyone who has big questions about the way the world is now and whether there can be a radically new, much better, world... whose heart aches at the violence and degradation women suffer everywhere, the wanton police murders of Black and Brown people, the suffering of millions of refugees driven from their homes, and all the other horrors... who is part of, or just getting into, the movement for revolution.

Come to Revolution Books this Wednesday, 7 pm,
to talk about the book

SATURDAY JANUARY 16, 2 PM
Evolutionary Biologist Jerry Coyne on Faith versus Fact

Author Jerry Coyne, professor emeritus in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Chicago, will lead a conversation about his new book Faith vs. Fact: Why Science and Religion Are Incompatible--what is science and the scientific method and the great harm done when faith is mistaken for fact in making important decisions about the world we live in.

"The distinguished geneticist Jerry Coyne trains his formidable intellectual firepower on religious faith, and it's hard to see how any reasonable person can resist the conclusions of his superbly argued book."

Revolution Books Supports StopPatriarchy.org Call for Protest
SUNDAY JANUARY 17, 1 PM
Federal Courthouse, 219 S. Dearborn, Chicago

Join the "March Against Female Enslavement" contingent taking part in the counter-protest to the #MarchFor Lies (the so-called "March for Life")--anti-abortion fanatics who are busing their followers into the Loop this Sunday, January 17. We are joining the powerful outpouring called by FURIE (Feminist Uprising to Resist Inequality & Exploitation) against these forces who inspire the murder of abortion providers and who have legal and political support from the highest reaches of this system.

Be part of the contingent--spread the news to your friends; call RB (773-489-0930) with your ideas; plan to come to the bookstore Sunday, January 17, 11am, to prepare, to gather materials and go to the protest as a group. Check out this article from last summer, where women and men wore BLOODY PANTS to dramatize the women who have lost their lives because of being denied the right to abortion.

Think about the fact that Anna Yocca was just jailed in Tennessee for 'attempted murder' because she tried to self-abort her fetus with a COAT HANGER! How can you turn away? This is one more reason you must act NOW to defend the reproductive rights--the humanity--of half of the people on the planet!

Looking Back... Looking Forward

2015
A year of righteous resistance to the crimes of this system! And through this year, Revolution Books grew as a center in Chicago for people who question why things are this way, and as a place where people meet the revolution. Our selection of books increased. We hosted more author appearances, informal discussions, film screenings, and art shows. RB began to forge community among people from the most oppressed areas of the South and West Sides... artists and intellectuals... youth on the front lines of protesting police brutality and murder... women and men doing battle against the patriarchal oppression of women... critical thinkers, book lovers, and more. And RB was able to introduce people to the leadership of Bob Avakian (BA), the Chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party. BA's books, including BAsics, and films of his talks introduced many new people to the most advanced scientific revolutionary theory aiming at the full emancipation of humanity: the new synthesis of communism brought forward by this revolutionary leader.

What Will 2016 Bring?
Many plans are underway, including evolutionary biologist Jerry Coyne coming on January 16 to discuss his book (see below) and programs on the 22nd and 23rd in concert with the call to "Stand Up for Abortion Rights" and to counter-protest the March for "Life" in Washington D.C. But YOU ARE NEEDED to help build RB into a vibrant center for exploring ideas about how to change the world and strengthen resistance to the crimes of this system, and for learning about revolution and communism. There are many ways for you to be a part of this:
  • Buy books so that RB can stock a wider range of titles.
  • Suggest book titles that RB should order.
  • Donate your gently used books so we can offer more titles at lower prices.
  • Volunteer a few hours a week or a month to come to RB--this will mean the store can expand its hours.
  • Come to programs yourself and spread the word about RB events on social media.
  • Help plan events and programs.
Come in during store hours, call us at 773 489 0930, or send us an email with your ideas and suggestions!
