Revolutionary anti-July 4th fundraising
Monday, Noon-6pm at 63rd Street Beach
(Lakeshore & 63rd St.)
If you hate everything that July 4th is celebrating, if you dream of a world without America-without everything America stands for and everything it does around the world-then you'll want to be at the Revolutionary Anti-July 4th picnic.
Bring a dish to share. It's a potluck picnic. Come whenever you can and stay as long as you want. This will be a day to come together, with friends old and new, for good food, conversation, music. Bring swim wear, music, games, poetry, your favorite quote from BAsics to share. Children very welcome. No charge for children under 12.
Cost: $10 donation will buy a copy of BAsics
for a prisoner.
DIRECTIONS: Take the Red Line or Green Line to 63rd St. Then take the 63rd St. bus EAST to the end of the line.
Cars leave for picnic from Revolution Books at Noon. For more info, call 773.489.0930.

WILLIAM S. BURROUGHS: A MAN WITHIN
"William S. Burroughs: A Man Within is a feature-length independent documentary by director Yony Leyser, in collaboration with BulletProof Film, Inc.
The film paints a tender portrait of the Beat author and American icon, whose works at once savaged conservative ideals, spawned vibrant countercultural movements, and reconfigured 20th century culture.
It features never-before-seen archival footage of Burroughs, as well as exclusive interviews with colleagues and confidants including: John Waters, Patti Smith, Genesis P-Orridge, Laurie Anderson, Amiri Baraka, Jello Biafra, Sonic Youth, Iggy Pop, Gus Van Sant, David Cronenberg, with narration by actor Peter Weller and an original soundtrack by members of Sonic Youth and the Patti Smith Group.
William Burroughs was one of the first writers to cross the dangerous boundaries of queer and drug culture in the 1950s, and record his experiences. Eventually he was hailed the godfather of the beat generation and influenced artists for generations to come. However, his friends were left wondering, did William ever find happiness? This extremely personal documentary breaks the surface of the troubled and brilliant world of one of the greatest authors of all time." ... From the Bullet Proof Films website

Pilsen is known for its huge colorful murals that depict the histories of Mexico, Pilsen and beyond. Jose Guerrero, a Pilsen-based muralist and our tour guide, said that the Mexican Revolution helped revive murals because workers used them to communicate their causes. Today, Pilsen's murals are part decorative, part educational. Like the Mexican murals that preceded them, says Guerrero, "their colors help lift the spirit."
Please join us after the tour for a bite to eat at a local restaurant. We'll have a chance to discuss what we've just seen, and hear more about BAsics, including getting thousands of copies of BAsics into prisons. (Lunch is not included in the ticket price.)
