January 10, Thursday-Author Rabbi Brant Rosen

$21.00
Thursday January 10, 2013 Author Presentation and Book Signing
Rabbi Brant Rosen, author of
Wrestling in the Daylight:
A Rabbi's Path to Palestinian Solidarity

In 2006 Rabbi Brant Rosen, who serves a Jewish Reconstructionist congregation in Evanston, Illinois, launched a blog called Shalom Rav. The focus of his writing-and his activism-changed dramatically in December 2008, when Israel launched a  23-day military attack against Gaza, causing him to deeply question his lifelong liberal Zionism. Rabbi Rosen chose to make his struggle public: to wrestle in the daylight. Wrestling in the Daylight: A Rabbi's Path to Palestinian Solidarity is Rosen's self-curated compilation of these blog posts.

A  benefit for Revolution Books

Friday Dec. 14, 7:30 pm
Saturday Dec 15, 7:30 pm
 Wallace Shawn's
THE FEVER
performed by David Shapiro
1655 W. Cortland Ave. Chicago,   IL
Tickets $20
facebook event

Chicago Reader critic Justin Hayford wrote of THE FEVER:   "It's a wickedly difficult monologue in which a man of privileged upbringing stands onstage for an hour and a half, explaining how he's confronted the atrocities perpetrated in 'poor countries' but remaining unable to process the experience. The difficulty of this play lies in its potential to degenerate into an indulgent white-liberal guilt trip. Luckily Shapiro... appreciates the complexity of Shawn's text, the subtlety of its emotional landscape, and perhaps most important its abundance of ironic humor."

American Theatre magazine on "The Fever":
"Recalling the onset of illness in a Third World hotel bathroom, the narrator tells about his privileged childhood, his elitist adulthood, and his gradual realization that he must share responsibility for his society's immorality... You can react to Shawn's play in one of two ways -- you can get angry, or you can reevaluate your life."
When actor David Shapiro introduced "The Fever" to Chicago in 1995, Wallace Shawn said, "I wish I could have done it like David did, but I didn't know how." The Chicago Reader wrote: "...one of the most memorable off-Loop theater experiences of the 1990s." This production was also performed at New York's La MaMa Theatre.
The cause of Revolution Books:
