Egypt's Presidential Election:
Emancipation Not on the Ballot by Larry Everest
Sixteen months after the Egyptian people rose up and drove the hated U.S. puppet Hosni Mubarak from power, the country has elected a new president. On Sunday, June 24, a week after the June 16-17 run-off voting, Egypt's Constitutional Committee named Mohammed Morsi of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood the winner over former general Ahmed Shafik. Shafik was the candidate backed by Egypt's military which has run the country for the last 52 years.

The U.S. government and media called the vote Egypt's "first free and fair election." The Brotherhood, Egypt's military, and the U.S.-which had been closely involved in these events-all praised the outcome as a victory for "democracy," the transition from military rule to civilian control, and a big step toward fulfilling the aspirations of Egypt's 90 million people and completing their "revolution."

Egypt's vote may have served the agenda of the defenders of Egypt's intolerable social order, including the U.S., at least for now. But for the Egyptian people, it will not bring or open up possibilities for any meaningful change. Instead it is but another maneuver to keep the chains of oppression firmly around their necks. Funds raised at Garfield Park Barbeque will go to supporting the BAsics Bus Tour.  This barbeque fundraiser is inspired by BAsics 1:13 quote:

"No more generations of our youth, here and all over the world, whose life is over, whose fate has been sealed who have been condemned to an early death or a lifetime of misery and brutality who the system has destined for oppression and oblivion even before they are born. I say NO MORE of that."
-Bob Avakian, Chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA

USED BOOK SALE  REMINDER
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Save Revolution Books
July 21-22    Sat Noon-7 pm    Sun Noon-5pm

This weekend is a crucial time to raise funds for BOTH the BAsics Bus Tour and for Revolution Books. The BAsics Bus Tour needs to raise $28,000 over the next 2 weeks and Westside residents are organizing the Garfield Park barbeque to help meet this need. Also, Revolution Books needs to raise hundreds of dollars at our used book sale in order to stay open. Everyone can contribute to these projects in some way.
  • Order plates for you and friends. (Remember-you can pick up your plates at Garfield Park OR Revolution Books.)
  • Volunteer at RB Sat. or Sun. and help run the book sale and sell BBQ plates. Call 773.489.0930.
  • Contribute used books for the book sale. Bring by or call 773.489.0930.
  • Donate online now at basicsbustour or Chicago Revolution Books blog.
  • Just come over, eat and buy books! (Don't forget to pre-order plates.)
Garfield Park is only 3.5 miles away from RB, yet light years away in social distance from the neighborhoods where many RB customers live. The Westside residents organizing the BBQ benefit were inspired by Bob Avakian's BAsics quote 1:13 - "No more generations of our youth..." (above). RB is also dedicated and working to make that "No more generations..." declaration real.

50 Shades of Grey: Bad for Women! Bad for Sex!

50 shades of greyMillions of copies of this book have been sold and everyone has been buzzing about what it means that women are attracted to this fantasy.

This is harmful!

It's bad for sex - at a time when more space needs to be opened up for people to imagine and experience the full richness of what sex can be between mutually respectful and equal partners, this book pushes people to get over their discomfort and wallow in sex as degradation and enslavement.

50 Shades of Grey: Bad for Women! Bad for Sex!
50 shades of grey
Discussion at Revolution Books
July 19, Thurs.7 pm

50 Shades of Grey portrays a virginal college grad falling for a stunningly wealthy, controlling, powerful and troubled man who insists on totally owning her and getting off while hurting her with riding whips, chains, paddles and violently degrading sex. Despite her tears, deep isolation and confusion she comes to find this fulfilling and enjoyable.

Millions of copies of this book have been sold and everyone has been buzzing about what it means that women are attracted to this fantasy.
In reality, the attraction to this "fantasy" is not shocking. It's only different by a matter of degree from the common romance novel or fairy tail that women have been indoctrinated with their whole lives: a young, virginal and insecure woman somehow attracts a man who she "doesn't deserve." He is powerful, jealous, moody and controlling. She is frightened, but the more she submits the more she sees abuse is just how he shows his love. Finally, she is made "worthy" because he wants to possess her.

The only thing new this time is that she has to sign a contract that refers to her as "The Submissive" and he buys her platinum and diamond jewelry to cover her bruises.

This is harmful!

It is bad for women - at a time when, under the guise of "post-feminism" women are once again being pushed to embrace the role of "breeder" or "sex object," this book reinforces and makes appealing the idea that women should be owned and controlled by men.

It's bad for sex - at a time when more space needs to be opened up for people to imagine and experience the full richness of what sex can be between mutually respectful and equal partners, this book pushes people to get over their discomfort and wallow in sex as degradation and enslavement.

NOTE: You do not have to have read the book to participate!  All thoughts are welcome. Come join this stimulating discussion.
