Can it happen here? Is it happening here? The "F" word--fascism. This dialogue between Yale philosopher Jason Stanley and co-initiator of RefuseFascism and spokesperson for Revolution Books Andy Zee is co-sponsored by the Brooklyn Book Festival.
Under the Trump/Pence regime we have witnessed a program of blatant white supremacy and male supremacy, and xenophobic racism toward immigrants. Institutional norms have been steamrolled. Crude displays of American jingoism, draconian moves to criminalize and crush protest and dissent, as in Portland. What are the lessons of history, and in this unprecedented situation what are the appropriate forms of action to stop fascism?
Jason Stanley is a philosopher at Yale. His book, "How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us Against Them," sets out essential features and dynamics of fascism.

Andy Zee is a co-initiator of RefuseFascism and spokesperson for Revolution Books. He makes the case that we are now being ruled by a fascist regime and why we need mass, sustained, nonviolent but determined protest to drive this regime from power and prevent the full consolidation of fascist rule

Front page headline from today's New York Times (all caps): "TRUMP REITERATES REFUSAL TO HONOR ELECTION RESULTS"

Trump, Barr and Pence are openly stealing the elections and ramming through the installation of another Christian fascist to the Supreme Court. Trump’s MAGA mobs maraud around the country in water and land caravans; they murder protesters and innocent people by guns and by their cars. They spread COVID. They are inflamed with reactionary passion. All for the purpose of rousing their followers and intimidating and demoralizing all who should be standing up for justice.

We face a critical crossroads. The hour is late, but not too late. Relying only on our voting will lead to disaster. The Trump/Pence regime is subverting the election right now and preparing to nullify it. Waiting to act till they do so will be too late.

We must act now. Beginning Saturday, October 3, we will gather and bring our family, friends, and community into the public squares of cities and towns across the country in non-violent protest unified by the demand: Trump/Pence OUTNOW! And come back in waves, day after day.

Together, in all our diversity, from our many different political perspectives, every race and religion, different life experiences, young and old, we must share our skills, our moral courage and commitment, and our aspirations for a world not dominated by fascist terror to build growing, daily nonviolent protests, not stopping until this fascist regime has been driven from power. *Come Saturday and discuss a vision of what this could look like*.

Imagine the central square filling every day with growing numbers of people united by our one demand that this regime must go, stating and projecting our demand to the whole world. Imagine different feeder marches, from different struggles for justice bringing their own banners and demands, into the public square to join with others who see the Trump/Pence regime as a common obstacle we must overcome together.

Imagine standing for and modeling our values – wearing masks, engaging in principled debate, taking care of each other, refusing to be provoked but refusing to back down in the face of repression - in stark contrast to the hate and bigotry of the regime and their fascist movement – with music, film, poetry, and visual art giving life to this vibrant scene. Imagine car caravans and marches emanating out from the public square to other neighborhoods, waking and shaking people up to act on their conscience and bring waves of more people demanding Trump/Pence Out Now! Imagine how this can be amplified through social media.

If you are part of a movement or struggle, bring that in! If you are brand new to the struggle, now is the time to start. A fascist America is an unprecedented danger to global humanity that none of us can defeat on our own -- but together we have the power to mobilize the one force that can stop it: the millions who hate everything Trump and Pence stands for. Let us rise to this challenge together.

Trump deliberately deceived the world about the danger of the virus at the cost of tens of thousands of lives. Bob Woodward got it on tape! Now, Trump continues to lie, assail science, traffic in conspiracy theories, hold super-spreading rallies, and sabotage attempts to contain the pandemic. Many of those lost – disproportionately Latinx, Black and Native American – Trump would have gladly killed off anyway.

This is Trump’s genocidal, fascist worldview. Will it be yours?

In word and deed, each of us must show where we stand.

On September 21, mark the grim milestone of 200,000 Covid-19 deaths with the resounding demand for an end to the death, lies, and fascist escalation: TRUMP/PENCE OUT NOW!

 The science-hating response to COVID-19 is but one leading edge of an entire program of hatred, bigotry, and cruelty directed at the masses of people. The different strands of this fascist program – the white supremacy, the misogyny, the xenophobia, wrapped in the flag and the Bible taken literally – are consolidating into a different form of rule in this country, relying on violence, terror, and brutality.

 Waiting for or relying on the upcoming election alone – an election Trump is already sabotaging and refusing to be bound by – to remove this regime is not just irresponsible. It is complicity.

 We must rise now, as millions did earlier this year for Black lives, uniting and preparing to struggle with all we’ve got to oust this fascist regime and bring its program to a halt. Our actions must lead into an October of people from many different backgrounds and viewpoints coming together week after week, day after day, in growing continuing nonviolent protests that do not stop until this demand is met: TRUMP/PENCE OUT NOW!

Tens of thousands pack his rallies, violently caravan through the streets, and prepare to intimidate Black, Latino, and Native American voters on November 3rd.

Time to Get Up and Fight, "This week, legendary Watergate journalist Bob Woodward released a recorded conversation in which Trump confessed that he deliberately played down the danger of COVID-19 to 'not cause a panic.' This is rich coming from a fascist lunatic whose whole rise to power has been built on stoking white supremacist panic against immigrants, Black people, protesters, Antifa, Democrats, and anything that stands in the way of their fascist America. The Woodward tapes have re-awakened outrage that at least tens of thousands of the 190,000 people who have died so far from COVID-19 could have been saved with a science-based policy to control the pandemic.

"It’s valid to question the ethics of Woodward sitting on this information since February. We don’t know what might have changed if people had definitive proof that his policies were not based on ignorance but deliberate political calculations. But to those who have directed all their vitriol against Woodward, barely mentioning Trump in their diatribes or worse: excusing Trump because 'we all know he lies anyway,' I have news for you. You now are also sitting on this information, and if you’re still not demanding Trump’s immediate removal from power and joining with people who are in the streets voicing their refusal to go along with this vicious murderous program, after 190,000 people have already died, you need to stop pointing your finger at Woodward and look in the mirror..."

For three and a half years, a demented bully has lied, jeered, broken the law, torn families apart, built concentration camps and packed them full, threatened to lock up his opponents, pardoned and lionized outright war criminals, brandished nuclear weapons, declared himself above the law, demeaned women, denied science, fueled the mass deaths of COVID, threatened the media, and cheered for white supremacists and vigilante murderers.

More times than we can count, he has shocked the conscience of the world.

More times than we can count, experts have cried, “He can’t do that!” But he does it anyhow.

If he is allowed a second term, all this will be unspeakably worse. (read more)

Everyone has a role to play, and everyone should aim to play the biggest role they can. Growing numbers of people with platforms of disproportionate influence – artists and celebrities from Hollywood to HipHop and sports, social media “influencers,” religious leaders, community, social, legal and environmental justice advocates, scientists and doctors… using their voices to amplify and popularize September 5 and its mission and raise necessary funds, who will come out on the 5th and take up this mission as their own. This Tuesday, Sept 1, the Fascist-in-Chief Donald Trump is coming to Kenosha to fan the flames of white supremacist violence by police and vigilante thugs - giving them backing to gun down Black people and protesters. This is fascism and a foreshadowing of what is in store with even more vengeance and terror if this regime is allowed to remain in power. Police gun down Black and Brown people. The Trump/Pence regime backs the police, sends paramilitary forces against the people, and calls for racist thugs to exact vengeance against the people.  Peaceful protesters are run down and shot down.
